What happens when a young baseball player, out of necessity, learns to pitch both right- and left-handed? This novelette explores his techniques and the challenges that erupt on and off the field
when he becomes “ambi-disastrous” on the mound. Although written with a younger readership in mind, baseball fans of all ages find The Switch Pitcher thrilling, as they do with the five bonus short stories.
Aldo Vidali, an 84-year-old collaborator of one of cinema's greatest directors Federico Fellini, wrote a review of the first edition of The Switch Pitcher, and urged it be made into a motion picture. “Children, parents, and grandparents would flock to see such a movie,” he said.
Among the bonus features is a short story about a sunflower living in a keyhole garden that literally “comes to life.”
The second short story is a non-fiction account of an encounter with a UFO wherein the subject about thirty years later recounts details of the event while under hypnosis.
In the feature entitled ROD & REEL SNAPSHOTS, the author recounts unique fishing expeditions.
Another non-fiction entry is about growing up with a magical teddy bear named Fleddie Peddie.
The fifth short story, entitled PERIPHERAL ACCELERATON, is about an elderly man who is a perfectionist. He shares his extreme attention to detail with a friend, proving, for instance, the idea that it is extremely intelligent people who become carsick. He also recounts what it is truly like to be a time traveler.

I wish more books were written like this one, perfect for a young audience but enjoyable for adults, too. I liked the variety, with the additional short stories, and the journey of Hermie Brubaker, the young switch pitcher, as he learned a lot about baseball and life. This book really drew me into it, which prompts me to give it such a high rating. I highly recommend it!

The Switch Pitcher edition by W Leon Smith Children eBooks Reviews

The writer of this comment is an 84-year-old collaborator of one of cinema's greatest directors Federico Fellini. I am sure that "The Switch Pitcher" will become a classic in its field the day a smart film producer discovers it because it is a perfect screenplay in the charming disguise of a children's book. "The Switch Pitcher" is full of fun, suspense, and heart-warming memories of America when it still was a free country. The America before the destruction of our noble Republic. It tells of a time when every child felt secure in his rights and demanded justice, even on the baseball field. When our nation was strong but capable of goodwill toward all and had a true love of fair play and honesty. Children, parents, and grandparents would flock to see such a movie, whose message would restore a sense of a sane society and kindle joy in wholesome American sports for our children with spirit and faith in the future.
W. Leon Smith's "The Switch Pitcher" is a delightful, action-packed novelette for everyone who loves and plays (truly or vicariously!) baseball. Not only will you be thoroughly entertained, you'll learn a thing or two about the rules of the game from someone (the author) who also relished playing baseball as a kid. We've all heard of switch-hitters, but switch-pitchers? The story follows switch-pitcher George Herman Brubaker, "Hermie," from his start as a six-year-old player in a small-town Texas pee-wee league through his eventual career in the big leagues, with a focus on the lead up to the little league playoffs and the final game between the local favorite, The Pups, and their infamous uppity rivals, The Ponies. "The Switch Pitcher" subtly encourages children to find something they love and to put their whole heart and practice into it.
I liked the characters in The Switch Pitcher and the way Mr. Smith told the story. It held my interest and is a book that I am looking forward to sharing with my nieces. All of the additional short stories were good, too! Especially the one about the magical teddy bear, Fleddie Peddie.
